FAQ
How is LEAF different from other certifications?
LEAF is different from other certifications in many ways. For one, LEAF is Canadian, which means we are in touch with the needs and concerns of Canadian restaurateurs, and up-to-date with Canadian Government rebates and environmental policy. Perhaps most importantly, we believe in accountability and do not permit online or self-certification. LEAF certification is only available through an on-site assessment, completed by accredited LEAF consultants or agencies in Canada. In addition, LEAF has a thorough and comprehensive evaluation which adequately addresses the environmental issues posed by the foodservice industry.
Can I become certified online?
No. We believe in accountability and, for this reason, do not permit online or self-certification. LEAF certification is only available through accredited LEAF consultants and agencies in Canada.
How much will it cost and what does that include?
As a non-profit organization, LEAF aims to help all all restaurateurs, regardless of budget. Options are available that can work for any food service operator. Contact us for more info.
Do I have to purchase everything organic or local to become certified?
No. LEAF works on a points system, and only a few criteria are mandatory for certification. You will be awarded points for positive food service practices. LEAF Accredited Consultants are trained to work with you to develop a strategy that will both reduce your environmental impact, and limit the amount of disruptions to your current processes.
Is certification good for a lifetime?
No. LEAF-certified restaurants must undergo yearly audits to confirm continued sustainable practices and accountability.
